The NFL's year-long suspension for Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon for violating the league's substance-abuse policy was officially upheld today, after Gordon submitted an appeal. Per the NFL, Gordon's suspension is effective immediately, which means he could miss training camp next summer. Gordon will have to apply for reinstatement following the 2014 season.

Gordon, who led the NFL in receiving yards (1,646) last season despite only appearing in 14 games, had marijuana "incidents" at Utah and Baylor, the two schools where he played his college football. He failed a drug test recently — again — and said it was due to second-hand smoke. Still, Gordon has passed "at least 70 drug tests since being entered into Stage III of the NFL's drug program last year," according to CBS. Gordon apologized to his teammates and his fans in a statement via the NFLPA:

“I’d like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans. I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn’t exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. I would like to sincerely thank the people who have been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging time, including my family, my agent, my union, my legal team, and the Cleveland Browns staff.”

This is, of course, total bullshit. Sure, it's a result of poor bargaining by the players, but fam — Ray Rice gets two games for beating his wife unconscious and Gordon gets a year for puffing reefer. Something's not right here.
