Daniel Murphy hit a tie-breaking solo home run off Zack Greinke in the sixth inning, and the New York Mets beat the Dodgers, 3-2, in Los Angeles on Thursday to win Game 5 of the National League Division Series and advance to the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2006.

Murphy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Prior to his go-ahead homer, he doubled in Curtis Granderson in the first and walked and scored the tying run on Travis d’Arnaud’s sac fly in the fourth. Murphy had advanced to third base by stealing the bag when the Dodgers got caught in a shift after a walk to Lucas Duda.

New York brought in closer Jeurys Familia to record a six-out save in the eighth and ninth innings. He retired all six batters he faced, including pinch-hitter Chase Utley — perceived by many to be the series’ villain after his take-out slide broke the leg of New York shortstop Rubén Tejada and led to a Los Angeles rally in Game 2.

Mets starter Jacob deGrom got the win, recording seven strikeouts in six innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks.

Justin Turner had three hits and an RBI for Los Angeles. Greinke took the loss.

New York advanced to host Chicago on Saturday night in Game 1 of the NLCS. The Cubs defeated the Mets all seven times the teams played this season.
