Cubs Fans Raise Money to Send Steve Bartman to Playoff Game

Hey, Steve Bartman — Chicago is ready to kiss and make up.

Bartman, the man reviled in the Windy City for his infamous decision to interfere with a fly ball when the Marlins and Cubs met in the NLCS that is often cited as the reason Chicago lost the series, is the subject of a GoFundMe campaign where fans can raise money to send him to the Cubbies upcoming Wild Card game against the Pirates.

To refresh a moment that sticks in the heart of Cubs fans everywhere:

Per the GoFundMe page:

Lifelong Cubs fan wants to make amends for 2003, lets make it happen. First we need to find him to get him to the big game. If anyone knows where he is at, tell him we are looking for him. The money would pay for his expenses including his ticket, hotel room, flights and a little spending money.

If he cannot be found by time of the big game all the proceeds raised will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Hmm, it seems Cubs fans are feeling just a wee bit forgiving since times are good now. They’re back in the postseason, they’re managed by the fun and smart Joe Maddon and they have a slew of young prospects that make the future look bright.

Of course, maybe this is just a scam. Maybe fans want to get Bartman to Wrigley Field (or wherever the game is actually played) just so they can pelt him with beer because it’s hard to believe fans are so forgiving. Red Sox fans didn’t embrace Bill Buckner until they won the World Series in 2004, so we’d have to think Chicago won’t let go of the rage until they can be called World Champions.

Bartman’s legacy lives on in baseball infamy. He was the subject of an ESPN documentary and has maintained a very low profile. Will he take up the offer for the ticket? If he does, that would be more amazing than the Cubs winning the World Series.

No, no it wouldn’t.
