Nasty Brawl With Vicious Punch Mars Rangers-Blue Jays Game

Old tensions boiled over — and then some — during Sunday’s game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers.

During the eighth inning of the game, played in Texas, Toronto’s Jose Bautista slid hard into Texas second baseman Rougned Odor, who was so ticked off that he slugged Bautista right in the face, inciting an intense brawl and potentially setting him up for a multi-game suspension.

Bautista and Odor were ejected, as were six others. Bautista had gotten on base after Texas pitcher Matt Bush hit him, ostensibly as payback for the bat flip.

A slo-mo look reveals how hard Odor’s punch was:

Bautista has been public enemy number one among the Rangers faithful after his epic bat flip during the fifth game of last year’s ALDS.

It took some 10 minutes for things to get back under control, but that didn’t last because once the game resumed Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Chavez plunked Texas’ Prince Fielder with the very first pitch. He wound up getting tossed.

The Blue Jays and Rangers will not meet again in the regular season.

After the game, Bautista gave Odor a backhanded compliment for clocking him.

Oh, yeah, Texas won the game, 7-6. And while the game will be remembers for the brawl, there is an interesting footnote. The aforementioned Matt Bush, the number one overall pick in the 2004 draft, got his first career win. His career had been sidetracked by drug and alcohol problems, as well as three-and-a-half-year stint in prison for his role in a serious car crash.
